I have been searching for information regarding our great grandmother for over a year and have not found anything on her or her family.

It's been said she was working at a boarding school in Timberlake, SD, when she met and married De Smet Richard LaRoche around 1905. They had two sons together, Sylvester "Buster" Harold on December 10, 1905 and Sherwood Earl on October 7, 1907. The marriage crumbled and she left her young sons when they were only 4 and 2.

Very little is known about her and there are differing recollections of where she came from. One aunt remembers grandpa saying she was from Ohio, another recalls hearing Illinois. I found one record for Sherwood that said she was from Oregon. She's also thought to have been from Washington and her & Desmet meeting during the Pendleton Rodeo in Oregon. Grandpa's niece recalls her also being called Vinnie.

I have researched numerous links on various ancestry sites using the first names: Vernie/Vernia/Vinnie last names: Sour/Sours and Sowers. It usually results Sours as her married name or she is accounted at the time of SD births elsewhere, or she is too young or very old.

I'm hoping that we have a relative out there that I haven't thought of yet that knows more information or that someone in her family tree recognizes these photos. I've attatched a photo of her below. Thank you for any help!

I noticed at the ancestry message board. someone else is searching for your gr, grandmother.


Looking for Vernie Sours b.abt 1885 that was married to Dismas "Desment" Richard LaRoche. They had 2 children, Sylvester Harold LaRoche b.1905 d.1982 and Edward S LaRoche b. 1907 d.1999. Vernie Sours LaRoche left in 1909. Desment LaRoche remarried to Emma Amy Alice Gilland on Mar 29 1911 Degrey, South Dakota. Did Vernie remarry, etc. I would love to have the names of her parents, her actual birth/death dates and where she would be buried at. Desment and Vernie lived in South Dakota. I have looked on the census records and it only shows Desment and the 2 boys. Any help would be great!

Yes, that is my cousin & I searching. And thank you, still no new leads other then locating the 2 boys baptismal cert. She was with Desmet @ the time of baptismal & on their certs it has Vernie Sours for mother, so I'm gonna say that is actually her name & how it's spelled but no other info.

deemariou: do you know if Vernie and Desmas lived on any of the reservations in south Dakota?
the problem with the US censuses is they are done 10 years apart, so trying to find her with Desmet from 1900- 1910 is fruitless,to say the least.
That boarding school in Timberlake,SD may pan out.

I did another search. found the public Tree at ancestry.
it has her father as Aaron Sours,but no info on him.it has her married to Emmett simmons in 1909 Kanawha,WVa.
fact; she wasn't born in Ohio,or any of the states you mentioned above.
Mocavo.com has her born 1884, and married Desmas DeSmit Richard laRoche in 1905 in Canada.i searched in Canada and came up with a blank.
I am sorry,but I couldn't come up with any new leads either.

Thank you. I also found and searched Canada because it says that's where they were married. Nothing...
I believe Desmet aka Dick lived on the Cheyenne River Reservation for a bit. I was finally able to track down the boys birth certificate but have yet to see it in person. Sylvester was baptized in Stephan, SD in January 1906 & Sherwood baptized in Lower Brule, SD in October 1907. On both certificates it states her name as Vernie Sours.
